Medicare Advantage vs Medicare Supplements: Which One Is Right For Me?
September 17, 2018 | Tom Peterson
Which Medicare Plan is the one for you? Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Supplements are the two main plans that are used to coordinate with Original Medicare. Check out this list of these plans and see which one would be the best fit for you.
Medicare Advantage | Medicare Supplements (Medigap) |
Often includes Part D plan | Part D flexibility |
Network driven | Doctor choices |
Premium varies | Premium is higher |
Annual contract | Guaranteed Renewable -cannot change benefits but can change premium |
Medicare Advantage:
Medicare Advantage can provide coverage through private insurance companies and these insurance companies can provide all of the benefits of Part A and Part B (except Hospice care). When you sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan, you must continue paying your Part B premium.
Medicare Supplements (Medigap):
Medigap can cover some health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover (like premiums, copayments, and deductibles). However, Medicap does not cover long-term care, dental care or eye glasses.
