How to Set Up Mail Order for your Rx Prescriptions

April 7, 2020 | Debby Jesser

During these uncertain times, your health and safety is paramount. If you’re currently taking medication and are worried about visiting the pharmacy, now is the perfect time to switch to mail order for your prescription drugs.

Most Medicare and health insurance plans offer a mail order option for your medications to be mailed to your house. It requires about 2 weeks to set up and works best with medications you take on a regular, ongoing basis. This option can be more convenient and can save money. Many companies charge the equivalent of 2 copays for a 3-month supply, saving up to 25% on medication costs over the year.

What to Consider Before Setting Up Mail Order Prescriptions

Before setting up mail order, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Some medications, like liquid eye drops, need to be kept at a certain temperature. The mail order pharmacy will do their best to pack your medicine in the safest manner possible, but medications can still be affected by extreme temperatures.

If you’re at home and can wait for those prescriptions, it shouldn’t pose an issue. But it’s still important to consider the types of medication you receive and be prepared if liquids arrive damaged or spilled – make sure you have some of your current prescription left on hand if you need to re-order.

How to Set Up Mail Order Prescriptions

Setting up mail order prescriptions is very simple. Do note that this can take about 2 weeks to set up. Please make sure you have at least 2 weeks’ worth of your current medication at home before enrolling in mail order.

  • Step 1: Have your prescription information readily available (name with correct spelling, dosage and frequency)
  • Step 2: Contact your insurance company by calling the number on the back of your card (or Twin City Underwriters for additional guidance)
  • Step 3: Wait for your prescription to arrive

That’s all you need to do to set up the process! If you’re unable to reach your insurance company, you can call us directly and we can facilitate the process for you.

If you do not currently have insurance or are in the process of enrolling in a new insurance, you may also be able to set up mail order through your pharmacy directly. Call your local pharmacist to discuss.
