Tips to Avoid Medicare Fraud

April 7, 2021 by Tom Peterson

It often feels like we hear about a new scam targeting seniors nearly every day. And while it’s true that Medicare fraud and similar schemes can be incredibly harmful, you can save yourself the worry and stress – while also protecting yourself – by taking a few careful steps.

Protect Your Information

Millions of people fall victim to identify theft every year. The best way to protect yourself is to be careful to whom you give out your personal information, such as your Social Security number. Be aware of the latest tactics that scammers are using, and be especially wary if someone approaches and asks you for information in that manner.

Keep Track of Your Medicare Card

In April 2018, Medicare gave recipients a specific Medicare number, instead of identifying them by Social Security number. This will prevent fraud, but only if Medicare numbers are guarded as closely as SSNs and other identifying information.
